In a significant political move, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has decided to vacate the Budgam assembly seat while retaining the Ganderbal constituency. This announcement was made by Pro-tem Speaker Mubarak Gul in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday.
Omar Abdullah had successfully won both the Ganderbal and Budgam seats in the recent assembly elections. However, his choice to keep the Ganderbal seat highlights its importance to his political legacy.
The Ganderbal seat has always been a stronghold for the Abdullah family. Omar Abdullah previously served as an MLA for Ganderbal from 2009 to 2014 during his first tenure as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
With Omar Abdullah’s resignation from the Budgam seat, the strength of the National Conference in the 95-member assembly has now decreased to 41 seats. Despite this, the party still holds a comfortable majority with the support of six Congress MLAs, five Independents, and one MLA each from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
As Omar Abdullah continues his role in the assembly, his main focus remains on addressing the needs and concerns of his constituents, particularly in the Ganderbal region, as he begins this new phase in his political career.
In other news, Jammu and Kashmir MLAs recently took their oath of office. During his first term as Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah worked on improving his speaking skills in Hindi, Urdu, and Kashmiri languages. On Monday, 21 October, he took his oath as an MLA in Kashmiri, while Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary took his oath in English.
The oath-taking ceremony of the MLAs marked the end of a six-year-long legislative hiatus in Jammu and Kashmir.
Additionally, on 19 October, the J-K Cabinet passed a resolution urging the Union Government to restore the statehood of the Union Territory. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Cabinet unanimously passed a resolution for the restoration of statehood in its original form. The Cabinet has authorized CM Abdullah to discuss this matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for the restoration of statehood.
