Top leaders from across the nation gathered to pay their respects to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Singh’s residence in Delhi on Friday, where Singh’s body has been placed following his passing on Thursday night at AIIMS hospital.
Alongside Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to Dr. Singh—an esteemed economist known for transforming India’s economy.
Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and KC Venugopal, were also in attendance at Singh’s residence. He passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related health issues.
Many political figures and notable individuals shared their sorrow over the loss of the former Prime Minister. Former Defence Minister and Congress leader AK Antony remarked in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, that “The passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh is a significant loss for the entire nation. When the Indian economy was struggling, then-Prime Minister Narasimha Rao appointed him as Finance Minister, and there were doubts about whether he could resolve the issues created by the previous administration. However, within a few months, the economy began to thrive again as he dismantled the licensing and quota system. Over his decade-long tenure, he proved himself to be one of the best Prime Ministers India has ever had…”
Dr. Singh’s body will be moved to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi for the public to pay their last respects from 8 am to 10 am on Saturday.
A state funeral is planned, and the government has declared a week of mourning from December 26 to January 1, 2025, following his death.
