The Government has postponed the introduction of two bills concerning the concept of ‘one nation, one election’ in the Lok Sabha until after the financial matters are resolved, according to informed sources.
Initially, the two pieces of legislation—The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill—were scheduled for introduction in the Lok Sabha on Monday. However, government sources mentioned that these bills might be presented later in the week, following the passage of the first set of supplementary demands for grants listed for Monday.
The updated agenda released by the Lok Sabha secretariat does not include these two bills for the day. Nevertheless, the government has the option to introduce legislative items at the last moment through a ‘Supplementary List of Business’, pending approval from the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Last week, the two bills aimed at facilitating simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were distributed to the members as per procedural requirements. The Winter session of Parliament is set to end on December 20, 2024.
