In preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections next month, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed the Jharkhand government to immediately remove acting DGP Anurag Gupta from his position. The ECI has directed that the charge be handed over to the next senior most IPS officer in the state.
The ECI’s decision to take action against Gupta comes as a result of previous complaints filed against him. Gupta has been the subject of several complaints, leading to the Commission’s decision to recommend his removal. In 2016, Gupta was accused of abusing his official position during the Rajya Sabha Elections, but was later cleared of all charges by the Central Administration Tribunal (CAT) after a nearly two-year suspension.
Overall, the ECI’s directive to replace Gupta as acting DGP is aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process in Jharkhand.
