The Calcutta High Court advised the parents of the RG Kar rape-and-murder victim on Tuesday to seek clarification from the Supreme Court (SC) and a division bench of the High Court regarding their plea for a further investigation into the case, which was filed last week. The matter is set to be heard again on January 15.
During the hearing, the lawyer for the parents expressed their lack of confidence in the current investigation being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They urged the High Court to mandate a new investigation promptly, claiming that vital evidence has vanished amidst the ongoing inquiry.
In response, CBI attorney Rajdeep Majumdar stated that the agency had provided three status reports to the Supreme Court subsequent to the filing of the chargesheet. He noted that both the SC and the division bench of the High Court already had access to some issues related to the case.
Considering these points, the High Court emphasized the importance of judicial discipline and instructed the counsel representing the victim’s parents to seek further clarification before addressing the case’s merits. When the parents’ lawyer indicated that they sought an investigation into aspects that the CBI had not looked into, the court directed that the CBI be included as a party in the proceedings.
