CottonConnect, a social enterprise dedicated to transforming global textile supply chains through sustainability, farmer capacity building, and women’s empowerment, is set to launch a pilot project focusing on Kasturi Cotton in either Gujarat or Maharashtra in western India. Additionally, the organization plans to explore working with Suvin cotton, a high-quality variety comparable to the finest Egyptian cotton, in southern India, according to CEO Alison Ward.
During Bharat Tex 2025, CottonConnect met with Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh to discuss the implementation of pilot projects on Kasturi Cotton. The organization has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian government to promote and adopt Kasturi Cotton, a premium variety with 100% traceability and certification.
Kasturi Cotton offers stringent quality parameters and different length options, ranging from 27-28 mm to 34-35 mm. The cotton has received significant attention for its quality control and branding potential. Ward emphasized the importance of leveraging India’s control over Kasturi Cotton as a powerful brand with the support of the Agriculture and Textiles Ministries.
Furthermore, CottonConnect has received an inquiry from a brand regarding Suvin cotton, sparking interest in potential collaborations in this area. Suvin cotton, known for its exceptional quality, could serve as a compelling narrative for Indian cotton on a global scale.
CottonConnect’s traceability platform, “TraceBale,” enables complete visibility of the cotton supply chain, tracking the journey from the farmer to the final product. Over 5.8 lakh farmers have registered on the platform, showcasing the organization’s commitment to transparency and sustainability in the textile industry.
In addition, CottonConnect has been actively involved in training farmers on regenerative practices, reducing pesticide use, conserving water, and boosting productivity. By collaborating with international experts, the organization aims to further advance regenerative agriculture practices in India.
Overall, CottonConnect is dedicated to promoting sustainable textiles and fostering partnerships that prioritize social and environmental responsibility in the textile industry. The organization’s efforts align with evolving global standards and guidelines, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
