President Droupadi Murmu has recently appointed Mazhar Asif as the new vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, as confirmed by officials. Asif, currently a distinguished professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Languages, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.
Asif, an esteemed JNU alumnus, played a significant role in the drafting committee for the new curriculum. His impressive background includes serving on the Executive Councils of both JNU and Maulana Abulkalam Azad National Urdu University. Additionally, he has been actively involved in national education initiatives, such as the National Translation Mission and the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language.
With nine published books in Persian, English, and Assamese, including a notable Persian-Assamese-English dictionary, Asif has established himself as a prolific scholar. His contributions to academic discourse can be seen through over 20 research papers presented at various national and international conferences.
The vacancy for the Jamia vice chancellor position arose in November 2023 following the conclusion of Najma Akhtar’s tenure. Asif’s appointment brings a new vision and leadership to the esteemed institution, promising a bright future under his guidance.
